 Additional Information by david.winter    19/01/2018

This first edition of Laser Contact ("Contact Laser" in French) was released for demonstration purposes by Philips. The disc has blue Philips label with dot-matrix text. Next editions of Laser Contact have color graphics labels.

Side 1 is a demonstration program containing interviews of Philips staff and TV advertisements for the new Philips equipment: Laservision and Compact Disc players, Teletext TV with printer, stereo equipment, etc. Each advertisement ends with the same slogan "Bien du plaisir, avec Philips" and its German version. The program is originally recorded in German but the French version can be selected using the proper audio channel.

The Compact Disc takes a significant place on both sides. The CD technology is well explained and compared to analog LPs, and the CD players are shown as well (CD 300 advertised). Manufacturing processes can be seen in the first European Compact Disc plant which still used Philips CD-100 players in the final test bench. As of this documentary, the production costs of a CD was 20CHF and the number of titles were limited to successful albums to ensure a good distribution.

Frame number:

  • 00000 - Program overview
  • 02080 - LaserVision - a new media
  • 05905 - Consumer information well understood by Philips
  • 12382 - Compact Disc, a success
  • 18662 - Swiss market for electronic entertainment
  • 23244 - Teletext: now in pocket format
  • 24535 - Videotape for sports training
  • 30113 - Philips times forecast

Side 2 has a menu allowing to select one of several chapters:

  • History of the record (from cylinder and disc phonographs to compact disc)
  • The Compact Disc technology
  • Sound comparison between a Compact Disc and a LP
