Peter Brook originally produced "The Mahabharata" as a nine hour stage event based on the classic Indian poem in 1985. The contents of this set is a six hour miniseries version produced in 1989 and broadcast on PBS and other outlets. There is one episode on each side of the first three discs; each episode runs approximately 55 minutes and includes opening and closing titles. The last disc features a one-hour "Making Of" documentary. The set also includes a booklet with information on the poem and the theatrical production.

A two hour and fifty minute cut was made of the material for theatrical and DVD release. This cut was reframed from 1.33:1 to 1.66:1.
