From the liner notes on the jacket:

Moby Dick was photographed and originally printed in an experimental Technicolor process designed by John Huston and the films cinematographer, Oswald Morris. To simulate the look of the 19th century photographs, a gray layer was incorporated in the prints to subdue the vivid Technicolor hues.
