The Dolby A noise reduction used on the master tape was not decoded on one channel, leading to the odd sounding release. This was a problem with many LaserDisc titles in the 80's and was due to sloppy work at the mastering plant. Needless to say, the undecoded Dolby A leads to a channel imbalance which varies with level (due to the way Dolby A works) and prevents any proper decoding of the Dolby Surround encoded audio.
