Japan only release. This is the original theatrical version, which has narration at the end saying that it is the end of part 1. Since they decided later not to fund the second part, the narration was changed for the DVD.

This laserdisc shows more image on the top and bottom of the frame, compared to the anamorphic (cropped) DVD.

The artwork on the inside of the gatefold jacket, is a map of Middle Earth.

While the laserdisc is open matte vertically, it shows less picture to the sides. The theatrical aspect ratio of the film is reported to be 1.85:1.
