The Overture and Intermission of the film have text reading such on-screen for their entire durations, and fade out once they conclude. The ‘Closing Music’ mentioned on the back of the jacket is the music that plays over the closing credits of the feature and is not ‘Exit Music’, afterwards the disc stops.
The Columbia Pictures logo and opening credits of the film are presented in a ‘scope’ 2.35:1 aspect, with the rest of the film being shown in 2.20:1, which is unusual since the rest of the film could’ve been presented in 2.35 without the need for slightly cropping the image. As the film switches over to the 2.20 aspect, the image slowly zooms from 2.35:1 into the aspect ratio the rest of the film is in; this can be seen clearly during side one, chapter two during 8:57-9:02.
Although the opening of the film appears to exhibit some film elements (mainly dirt and scratches) and appears a bit yellowed, of which can be seen during the Columbia Pictures logo and well as the opening of the film, however it is less apparent after about thirty seconds, where most of it is not visible-apart from a few speckles on screen here-and-there.
Because of the ‘Stereo Surround Sound’ note on the front of the cover, I assume that this release uses the films original Stereo 6-track mix, and due to it sounding pretty good, I assume it uses such as the source of the film’s soundtrack.
Although their logo appears on the rear cover, the Video Treasures logo does not make an appearance visually on this release (not even after the Image logo, since after it goes straight to the Overture), but are listed in the ‘Artwork’ copyright as ‘Video Cassette Sales, Inc.’, which can confuse some people-but is what they operate under. Speaking of, the copyright of the ‘Program Content’ is registered under ‘Hal Roach Studios Film Classics’, who issued a VHS release in 1986 before it was released under Video Treasures a year after, which explains their logo’s presence on the back.
The rear cover states ‘Significant sequences of this motion picture have been chapter encoded for your viewing enjoyment’, however only the four chapters shown on the back are on this release, the third side has no chapters encoded on it.
The film also contains dialog in Italian, Latin and German, none of which seem to be subtitled. |
