eXistenZ was a very late issue release that nearly never made it to production. It was one of the very last of the laserdisc releases licensed & distributed by IMAGE ENTERTAINMENT. As the volume of laserdisc sales had been falling month on month quite dramatically at this time (the then fairly new DVD format had really taken off by the late 1990s) the future sales figures were predicted to be very small on the last few laserdisc releases so the quantities actually requested for pressing were very low. Also the disc production costs were kept to an absolute minimum on most of the late issued titles.

Around the middle of 1999 (late May or early June?) IMAGE ENTERTAINMENT cancelled at very short notice most of their future laserdisc releases that had been announced. It appears that this one only just missed the cancellation list as Kuraray in Japan had scheduled the disc for manufacturing at a (then) future date so this one only just made it to production.

This title comes with no frills or "extra" features - there are no commentary tracks or additional footage sections etc, not even a trailer, but it is "Closed-Captioned for the hearing impaired". The transfer quality on this really is first class. The Dolby Digital Stereo soundtrack is superb & the picture quality is outstanding - it is as good as you will ever be likely see on the laserdisc format, a crystal clear image on screen.

The numbers pressed on eXistenZ were very low indeed. Like "End of Days" [LD 85240 WS] the quantity pressed on this was not even enough to cover the fairly good advanced orders placed by US retailers. An instant sell out at the time with very few actually reaching the retailers shelves so this has always been a very sought after & very hard to find laserdisc title. The discs were manufactured by Kuraray in Japan with the covers printed & the final packing done in the USA.
