The DVD, Criterion LD, DTS LD and standard LD all used the same director approved video transfer. The DVD and AC-3 encoded LD's used a 16-bit audio master that was remixed slightly for home use. The DTS LD utilized a 20-bit master taken from the same master used to make the theatrical digital sound prints and thus the DTS Digital Surround LD sounds quite a bit different, and better, than the DVD and AC-3 LD releases. Because of the changes to the AC-3 versions, the DTS LD needs THX re-equalization for proper playback in the home while the other releases do not.
