Showgirls was one of the two or three last Hi-Vision LD's released and was mastered using the NHK's improved and highly sophisticated MUSE-II encoder which reduced ringing and aliasing in the image as well as increasing resolution in moving areas of the picture and improving diagonal resolution, eliminating artifacts on certain diagonal angles. MUSE-II had increased color resolution in moving areas of the image too, providing several hundred more lines of chroma resolution during pans and within individual moving areas of the image. While MUSE-II looked its best when decoded with a MUSE-II decoder (which could be added, via an adapter, to existing MUSE decoders) the MUSE-II format was fully backwards compatible with the original MUSE standard and showed great picture improvement even on existing decoders without the MUSE-II adapter.
It's not known if MUSE-II adapters were ever released or if the NHK figured the improvement without the adapter was so great they were not needed at the time.
